Anurag Kashyap Apologizes for Remarks on Brahmin Community: “I Forgot My Boundaries in Anger”
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has issued a public apology after his remarks about the Brahmin community during a social media exchange triggered widespread backlash. The controversy escalated when a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against him at Bajaj Nagar Police Station in Jaipur on Saturday night.
Facing mounting criticism, Kashyap took to Instagram to share a heartfelt note, expressing regret over his words. In the post, written in Hindi, he admitted that in a moment of anger, he crossed a line and unintentionally hurt a community he has long held in esteem.

“In my anger, I overstepped. I ended up speaking disrespectfully about the entire Brahmin community—a community that has always been a meaningful part of my life. I realize now how many people I hurt with my words—my friends, my family, respected intellectuals, and those who’ve stood by me. I sincerely apologize for the language I used, for what I said, and how I said it. Moving forward, I will be more mindful and express myself in a way that reflects dignity and respect. I hope you will find it in your hearts to forgive me.”
The apology follows a police complaint filed by Anil Chaturvedi, a resident of Barkat Nagar, who accused the filmmaker of making derogatory remarks in response to a user on social media. According to Sub-Inspector Ram Kripal, the complaint was prompted by viral posts that drew attention to Kashyap’s now-deleted comments.
The filmmaker’s remarks were reportedly made in defense of his upcoming biographical drama, Phule, centered around social reformers Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule. The film, which tackles themes of caste and inequality, has already been under the spotlight, and Kashyap’s recent online interaction further intensified the scrutiny.
The incident has reignited discussions on responsibility in public discourse, especially for prominent voices in cinema and social media. While Kashyap insists that his intention was never to generalize or hurt any group, the episode has underlined the growing sensitivity surrounding public commentary in India.
