The Father of MM Keeravaani, Veteran Lyricist and Writer Siva Shakthi Datta Passes Away at 92; Industry Mourns His Loss

Renowned Telugu lyricist, writer, and artist Siva Shakthi Datta passed away at the age of 92 on July 7 at his residence in Manikonda, Hyderabad. Datta, the father of Oscar-winning music composer MM Keeravaani and uncle to acclaimed filmmaker SS Rajamouli, had been battling age-related health issues for some time.

Known for his mastery in Sanskrit-infused Telugu lyrics, Siva Shakthi Datta left a profound mark on Indian cinema with his poetic and timeless contributions. His death was confirmed by actor Chiranjeevi, who shared a heartfelt note on X (formerly Twitter), calling him a multifaceted genius—painter, scholar, storyteller, and writer—and extended his deepest condolences to Keeravaani and the family. Superstar Mahesh Babu also paid his respects in person.

Born as Koduri Subbarao in 1932 in Kovvur near Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, Datta was a multi-talented personality who began his creative journey under the pseudonym Kamalesh before adopting the name Siva Shakthi Datta. Over the decades, he earned a unique place in the industry for his work on films like Baahubali, RRR, Magadheera, Sye, Rajanna, Sri Ramadasu, and HanuMan.

Some of his most celebrated lyrical works include “Raamam Raghavam”, “Amma Avani”, “Agni Skalana”, “Nalla Nallani Kalla”, “Mannela Thintivira” and the “Anjanadri Theme Song”. His writing often reflected deep spirituality, grandeur, and classical elegance.

Early in his career, Datta moved to Chennai with a dream to work in films. He worked closely with veteran director K. Raghavendra Rao and contributed screenwriting and lyrics to multiple films, including the 1988 hit Janaki Ramudu. In 2007, he even directed a film titled Chandrahas.

His passing has left a void in the Telugu film industry, with fans and celebrities alike expressing grief and reverence for the legendary writer. His funeral was scheduled to take place in Hyderabad on Tuesday, with family, friends, and well-wishers bidding a solemn farewell to the literary maestro.

Siva Shakthi Datta’s legacy will continue to resonate through the verses and visuals he gifted to generations of cinema lovers.
