Anurag Kashyap Walks Away from Bollywood, Calls It “Toxic” and Driven by ₹500 Crore Dreams

Acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has officially distanced himself from Bollywood, revealing that he has left Mumbai and the industry behind. In a candid interview with The Hindu, Kashyap opened up about his decision, citing the film industry’s growing obsession with massive box office numbers as a key reason.
Anurag Kashyap’s Exit from Bollywood
Speaking about his departure, Kashyap stated, “I’ve left Mumbai. I want to stay away from film people. The industry has become too toxic. Everyone is chasing unrealistic targets, trying to make the next ₹500 or ₹800 crore film. The creative atmosphere is gone.”
Previously, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Kashyap expressed frustration over the changing dynamics of Bollywood. He praised South Indian filmmakers for their freedom to experiment, saying, “I envy them because now, it’s difficult for me to go out and experiment. The process has become all about money, profit margins, and pre-sales, even before a film starts. The joy of filmmaking is being sucked out. That’s why I’m moving out. Literally, next year, I’m leaving Mumbai.”
What’s Next for Anurag Kashyap?
Despite stepping away from Bollywood, Kashyap remains actively involved in cinema. He is currently promoting the Malayalam film Footage, directed by Saiju Sreedharan. Starring Manju Warrier, Vishak Nair, and Gayathri Ashok, the film originally released in August 2023, but its Hindi version is set to hit theaters on March 7.
Kashyap will also be seen in Dacoit, where he takes on the role of a fearless police officer. The film, which is being shot in both Hindi and Telugu, features Adivi Sesh and Mrunal Thakur in lead roles. The official release date is yet to be announced.
While his departure from Bollywood marks the end of an era, Kashyap’s passion for storytelling remains strong. His next chapter might unfold beyond Mumbai, but his cinematic voice is far from fading.
