Avian Influenza Outbreak in Telugu States: Thousands of Chickens Perish

In a concerning development, the Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are grappling with a significant outbreak of avian influenza (H5N1), commonly known as bird flu. The virus has led to the death of thousands of chickens, particularly in the East and West Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh.
Extent of the Outbreak
The outbreak was first detected in a poultry farm in Kanuru Agraharam of Peravali mandal, Nidadavole constituency. Reports indicate that nearly 62,000 out of 64,000 chickens in three poultry farms have succumbed to the virus over the past four days. Authorities were alerted to unusual chicken deaths as early as January 1, prompting the dispatch of 83 samples to the National High-Security Disease Diagnosis Laboratory in Bhopal for confirmation.
Preventive Measures in Telangana
In response to the outbreak in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, the Telangana government has implemented stringent measures to prevent the spread of the virus:
- Border Surveillance: Telangana has established 24 check posts along its border to inspect and restrict the entry of poultry vehicles from Andhra Pradesh. Special teams, including veterinary officials and police, are stationed at these check posts to enforce the ban.
- Public Awareness: District collectors have been directed to educate poultry farmers and the public about biosecurity measures, proper disposal of dead birds, and the importance of reporting any unusual poultry deaths promptly.
Health Advisory
While the H5N1 virus primarily affects birds, it can occasionally infect humans. However, health experts assure that consuming well-cooked poultry products is safe. The virus does not survive at high temperatures, so thoroughly cooking chicken meat and eggs eliminates the risk of infection. Nonetheless, the public is advised to exercise caution and adhere to recommended safety guidelines.
Impact on the Poultry Industry
The outbreak poses a significant threat to the poultry industry in both states, which is a major contributor to their economies. The culling of infected birds, transportation restrictions, and decreased consumer confidence are expected to result in substantial economic losses for poultry farmers and related businesses.
Authorities in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are on high alert, implementing measures to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread. The situation is being closely monitored, and the public is urged to stay informed through official channels and adhere to health advisories.
