“Coolie is a Mass Entertainer with Strong Emotions – Audiences Will Definitely Enjoy It”: Shruti Haasan

Coolie, the much-awaited pan-India action film starring Superstar Rajinikanth and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, is being produced on a grand scale by Kalanithi Maran under the prestigious Sun Pictures banner. The film also features King Nagarjuna in a crucial role, alongside Aamir Khan, Sathyaraj, Soubin Shahir, Upendra, and Shruti Haasan in prominent roles. With its high-voltage promotional content, the movie has already created massive buzz ahead of its grand release on August 14, across Telugu states through Asian Multiplex Pvt Ltd, managed by D. Suresh Babu, Dil Raju, Sunil Narang, and Bharat Narang.

Speaking to the media, lead actress Shruti Haasan shared some exciting insights about her character and her experience working on Coolie.

What is your role like in Coolie?
Working with Rajinikanth sir is truly a blessing. It’s been a great experience.
Personally, I connected deeply with this role. I’m sure audiences, especially women, will relate to it too. It’s an emotionally rich character, beautifully designed by the director.

There are rumors you play Rajinikanth’s daughter in the film. Is that true?
No, I actually play Sathyaraj sir’s daughter.

How was it sharing screen space with stars like Nagarjuna and Upendra?
It was amazing. I’ve worked with many stars before, but this one felt different.
Not every actor gets a chance to be part of a film that brings together so many superstars. This is a very special project.

What aspect of the story attracted you when Lokesh Kanagaraj narrated it?
I initially met him for a music album. During those meetings, he surprised me with this character.
Lokesh sir is known for his dark, gun-heavy action films, but this time, he pitched a strong female character, which really impressed me.

Will family audiences connect to this film?
Definitely. Both Rajini sir’s character and mine have strong emotional arcs that families will resonate with.

How is Nagarjuna’s character?
Absolutely powerful. For the first time, he plays a villain, and Telugu audiences will be completely surprised by his transformation.

Tell us about Lokesh Kanagaraj as a director.
He’s someone with a very clear vision. He knows exactly what he wants and makes it easy for actors to bring it to life. It’s a joy working with him.

Do you have scenes with Aamir Khan?
Yes. Aamir Khan is a family friend. His family supported me during a very important phase in my life. Working with him has been a very special experience.

How have the producers supported this film?
They’ve mounted the film on a huge scale, never compromising on the budget needed to tell the story right.

Have you watched the full movie?
Not yet. I’ve finished dubbing and watched a few portions. Everything I’ve seen so far looks fantastic.

What can you say about Anirudh’s music?
I’ve known Anirudh for a long time. I’m very proud of him. His music now elevates an entire film. He’s delivered brilliant music for Coolie.

DOP Girish’s work?
Girish is truly a director’s cinematographer. He understands and visualizes exactly what the director wants. His work in Vikram was phenomenal, and Coolie will have stunning visuals too.

Did Rajinikanth share any memories of his friendship with Kamal Haasan or your father?
Yes, he spoke a lot about his bond with my father and Kamal sir, their working styles, and the golden days. Their friendship is truly unique.

Any dream roles?
Not particularly, but I’m very passionate about music. As a musician myself, I’d love to play a musician on screen someday.

You’ve had a long and successful career. How do you feel about your journey?
I feel blessed. I’ve always enjoyed my work and never stressed too much about the future. I just focus on doing justice to whatever role I get. That’s still my mindset.

How would you describe Coolie in one line?
Coolie is a full-on entertainer with intense action and a strong emotional core. Audiences will definitely enjoy it.

What about your upcoming projects?
Last year was completely tied up with Coolie. I’m currently listening to scripts and am excited to collaborate with new directors and writers. I’ve heard some good stories in Telugu too—an announcement will be made soon.
