“I played a completely different role in ‘Junior’ — one I’ve never done before. The film will surely entertain everyone,” says actress Genelia

Popular actress Genelia is all set to make her comeback to South Indian cinema with the upcoming youth entertainer ‘Junior’, starring debutant Kireeti Reddy, son of noted politician and businessman Gali Janardhan Reddy. Directed by Radhakrishna, the film also stars Sreeleela as the female lead and is produced by Rajani Korrapati under the Varahi Chalana Chitram banner.
With chartbuster songs, an overwhelming response to the teaser and trailer, and star cinematographer K.K. Senthil Kumar onboard, the movie is set for release on July 18. Ahead of its release, Genelia shared her thoughts about the film and her character in a media interaction.
What attracted you to this project?
“This project came to me about three years ago. I wasn’t sure whether to take it up or not, but my husband Ritesh (Deshmukh) was quite positive about it and encouraged me to listen to the story. Once I heard it from the director, I was immediately drawn to the way he narrated it and especially to the uniqueness of my role.”
“I’ve always chosen roles that are different and meaningful. This one is very special and unlike anything I’ve done before. That’s why I knew I had to take it up.”
On working with the team
“This film felt like a beautiful package. Working again with Devi Sri Prasad, Senthil Kumar, and others felt like a reunion.”
Your role seems serious in the trailer?
“Rather than calling it serious, I’d say it’s a strong boss-like character. But as the story progresses, you’ll see how the character transforms. The director has treated it in a fresh and unique way.”
On Kireeti’s debut
“I’ve worked with many newcomers, but Kireeti truly stands out. He’s confident, an excellent dancer, and his performance is commendable. He’s very hardworking and puts in complete effort.”
Working with Senthil Kumar again?
“We worked together earlier in the film Sye. He’s known for his incredible work in Baahubali, RRR, and many other big projects. It felt great to collaborate with him again after so long.”
Any regrets about taking a break from films during your peak career phase?
“Not at all. Life comes with different phases, and I’ve had the privilege of doing some amazing films. Roles like Hasini in Bommarillu, Madhumathi in Happy, and others still live in people’s hearts. It’s a great feeling when audiences remember you by your characters.”
Will you continue acting now?
“Definitely! I’m open to taking up good roles. I don’t mind even if it’s a small role — as long as it’s memorable.”
What can audiences expect from you in ‘Junior’?
“I’m really excited because this is a character I’ve never done before. I’m eagerly waiting to see how the audience will receive it. I’m counting down to July 18!”
Any dream roles?
“Honestly, the journey itself feels like a dream — entering the industry, playing diverse roles, and receiving so much love from the audience. That itself is my dream come true.”
On working with Sreeleela
“She’s an amazing dancer and a fantastic performer. Very energetic and vibrant on set.”
Your thoughts on DSP’s music
“DSP is a phenomenal composer. It’s truly a blessing to have him on board. He brings positive energy and elevates every film he works on. The song Viral Vayyari is already a big hit, and Ritesh loves it too!”
On producer Sai Korrapati
“Sai Garu was the one who introduced this project to me. He’s been extremely supportive and caring throughout. He didn’t compromise on anything and mounted the film on a grand scale.”
You acted with Kota Srinivasa Rao in Bommarillu…
“Acting alongside a legend like Kota Srinivasa Rao Garu was a true blessing. I learned so much from him. His loss is a huge void for the film industry.”
Your co-stars like Ram Charan, Jr NTR, and Allu Arjun are doing big pan-India films now. How do you feel about that?
“They’re all my friends and incredibly talented actors. Watching them now as superstars makes me genuinely happy.”
Any plans to act in a film with Ritesh again?
“We worked together in the remake of Majili, which was a beautiful success. If another good love story comes our way, we’d definitely love to work together again.”
