Mohanlal’s ‘L2: Empuraan’ Creates History as First Malayalam Film to Cross ₹100 Crore Theatrical Share

Mohanlal’s latest action-packed blockbuster, L2: Empuraan, has officially rewritten the record books! The high-octane pan-India thriller, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, has become the first Malayalam film in history to cross the ₹100 crore mark in worldwide theatrical share, a groundbreaking moment for Mollywood.

Taking to X to share the celebratory milestone, Mohanlal wrote,
“100 crores+ worldwide theatrical share! First time in the history of Malayalam cinema!”
He accompanied the message with hashtags #L2E and #Empuraan, joining fans in the euphoric celebration.

Released on March 27, L2: Empuraan opened to massive hype and hasn’t slowed down since. The film has now grossed over ₹230 crore at the global box office, firmly cementing its status as a blockbuster phenomenon.

A sequel to the 2019 hit Lucifer, the film continues the saga with an ensemble cast that includes Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Suraj Venjaramoodu, and Indrajith Sukumaran in key roles. While the film initially sparked controversy due to certain visuals, the makers swiftly responded by undergoing re-censorship and removing the contentious content — a move that further helped boost its theatrical run.

Jointly produced by Antony Perumbavoor, Lyca Subaskaran, and Gokulam Gopalan, Empuraan is not just a cinematic sequel, but a cultural event — pushing Malayalam cinema into a new commercial era.
