Namit Malhotra’s Ramayana: A Grand Cinematic Reimagining of the World’s Greatest Epic Begins with ‘The Introduction’

Set over 5,000 years ago, Ramayana—a live-action, two-part cinematic universe—is being brought to life on an unprecedented scale by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios, in association with Oscar-winning VFX giant DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations. Revered by over 2.5 billion people worldwide, this adaptation of the timeless Indian epic is being envisioned as one of the most ambitious tentpole projects ever attempted, both in terms of scale and global appeal.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana is being shot specifically for IMAX and will release globally in two parts: Part 1 in Diwali 2026 and Part 2 in Diwali 2027. This cinematic experience merges Hollywood expertise with Indian creative brilliance, featuring global talent from both industries for the first time in a project of this magnitude.

The creators have now unveiled Ramayana: The Introduction, an official glimpse into this mythological cinematic universe. At its heart lies the eternal war between two legendary forces — Rama and Ravana. The launch campaign kicked off with grand fan events across nine Indian cities and a massive billboard takeover at New York’s Times Square, marking the global scale of this endeavor.

Led by visionary producer Namit Malhotra, Ramayana brings together India’s biggest acting talents, celebrated technicians, and Hollywood’s top creative minds to recreate one of civilization’s most profound stories—deeply rooted in Indian heritage and reimagined for the global stage as a state-of-the-art cinematic universe.

This is Ramayana — the saga of cosmic destiny, the triumph of good over evil, and a story that has continued to inspire millions for generations.

Cast and Key Roles:

Ramayana boasts a stellar cast of Indian cinema’s finest:

  • Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, a fourth-generation icon of Indian cinema
  • Yash, the pan-India superstar and co-producer, as Ravana
  • Sai Pallavi as the divine Sita
  • Sunny Deol, the beloved action hero, as Hanuman
  • Ravi Dubey as Lakshmana, Rama’s trusted brother

Producer Namit Malhotra shares:

“This is a culturally defining story for every Indian across the globe. With Ramayana, we are not just retelling history — we are presenting our legacy to the world. By assembling the best global talent, we are able to tell this story with authenticity, emotion, and cutting-edge cinematic innovation. We’ve seen many versions of Ramayana, but this one brings its landscapes, creatures, and battles to life with the grandeur they truly deserve. As Indians, this is our truth — and now, it becomes our gift to the world.”

Director Nitesh Tiwari adds:

Ramayana is a story that lives within us — a core part of our cultural DNA. Honoring that tradition while presenting it on a grand cinematic scale is our mission. As a filmmaker, it’s both a great responsibility and an emotional privilege. This is a story that has transcended time for millennia. We’re not just making a film — we’re creating a vision, steeped in devotion, designed with excellence, and meant to break boundaries.”

Crafted for the most prestigious formats in the world, including IMAX, Ramayana is envisioned as a transcendent dramatic experience — transporting audiences deep into the soul of one of humanity’s most enduring and spiritually rich epics.
